 A Welcomed Drink
« Thread Started on Jul 11, 2007, 1:37pm »

Wrhaevn came to the edge of the lake, sitting silently. He would of said 'here we are' or something of that nature, but the large, pure water was quite obvious- especially to a dying-of-heat-lion.

He knew now how she endured the heat so long, without just falling over for a rest, that fatal rest from which you never awake. And, admiring her wolf-like endurance, he thought of how fitting she'd be as a warrior.

But yet, he had to see how she battled.

But with that endurance, and being able to handle any kind of terrain, she could be a messenger, or a spy. Something like that, though she'd probably not want to do any more running, and Wrhaevn didn't blame her.

"If you're hungry also, well, this is called the Fish Lake..." He shrugged, sticking his claw barely in the surface of the water.
Curious, tiny sunfish came to investigate, and rght as they got close, Wrhaevn attempted flipping one out of the water.

Nothing came out but water, and he laid his ears back in annoyance. "I'm alone for now. Until others come... But now I guess I won't be so lonely, will I?" He laughed, then dipped his head down to take a drink.

Lamia bounded over to the edge of the lake and drank quickly, lapping up the water for a long time, the fur around her mouth damp and wet as she finished her refreshing cool drink. It gave her a bit more energy, her muscles relaxed, her throat soft and open.

She sat back on the ground and watch as she saw the little fish by Wrhaevn's paw. She was hungry and she did like a bit of fish, it was pretty rare for her to eat it since the drought had dried the rivers up. She turned to him as he finished and replied, "Of course you won't."She smiled then got up walking silently along the lake until she came to some stepping stones that lead a bit further into the lake. She jumped one by one until she could go no further and stood very still, not making a sound, her eyes dotting around trying to find any kind of fish. It took a while, but soon enough there was a medium size tuna like fish that was hovering in the water as it swam against the current.

She waited for the right moment, waiting to strike. Suddenly she swiped it with her paw, knowing her head was too far away and would just scare it. The fish came flying out of the water with the force and Lamia quickly leaped from the rock and caught it in her mouth. Unfortunately she could land on anything else, so she came crashing into the water which was deeper then she thought. Still holding the fish she swam to the top and smiled to Wrhaevn, feeling a little silly and wondering how stupid she probably looked when she caught the fish.

She reached the shore, chucking the fish onto the land she trudged out of the water. Her body cool from her little dip, she stepped away from Wrhaevn and shook a little to get most of the water out but enough to keep her cool. Then walked back over to him and sat down. Asking and laughing at the same time, "Well now that I've embarrassed myself, would you like one?"

Wrhaevn grinned. "Well, I've just embarressed myself as well by failing to catch one. So we're even on the embarressment scale... Go ahead and have your reward. We can go hunting afterwards."

There was another reason he wanted to hunt, however. Wrhaevn wanted to see how Lamia hunted, for it was very much like battle. Preparation... Planning... Strength and speed, endurance...

"Have any preferences to what you'd like to hunt?" Wrhaevn said, shrugging. It didn't matter much to him, he just liked the thrill oh the chase, and that awesome feeling you got when you closed your claws on a flank... A tender, juicy flank... Well, no, the sucessful hunts were the ones that preyed on the weak and sick. So the meat wouldn't always be so perfect, but it was certainly more filling than fish.

Wrhaevn looked at the fish, which was thrashing insanely in it's quest to get back in the water. He unsheated the claws on his right paw and proceeded to stab the fish, but not before getting slashed by one of it's spines by an unfortunate flop.

"Ah! The bitch..." Wrhaevn growled, biting it's head. His long canine sank right through the fish, he then blinked and spat it out at Lamia's feet. "Sorry." He said, giving his slightly cut paw a lick. "I had it coming, I guess. Hey, don't swallow a bone when you eat it." He grinned again, looking at the fresh kill.

Lamia nodded while smiling at him, she thought about it for a while, she didn't really mind what she ate. "I don't really mind what we eat, although I do like a bit of wildeneast from time to time. I think I saw a group over there."She turned her dial right around to see a small group of wildebeast grouped together.

She looked down at the fish and laughed at Wrhaevn's reaction as the fish cut him with it's spines. She was smiled then as it fell to her paws with it's head bitten right off, he was right though it had it coming. "Don't worry I might as well eat the wildebeast if they're there. Should we go then?" She smiled and turned looking over her shoulder to see if he was coming, she had a little plan for hunting and she'd tell Wrhaevn on the way.

Wrhaevn's ears perked forward, and he started following Lamia at a trot. "Just watch out for their horns and hooves... They'll probably run, but we could be killed as well. Anyway, if we make it out alive, it'll be good practice in case-" Wrhaevn's eyes glazed over- "We fight any horses later on..." He wondered as he walked if he should tell her about his vengeance plan. After a few seconds, he decided not to at the moment. He wanted to see if Lamia had a hunting plan.

"I'm glad that the first dark fem I met is not an evil fake. Those darks who think we have to be absolutely gothic... Peh. What's the point of a life like that? It's bull if you ask me." He snorted. "So any tactics for these wildebeests?"

Lamia looked forward at the wildebeast that blurred in the heat waves. Her auds listened carefully to his words, nodding she listened to the rest of what he had to say. She glanced over to him as he paused when mentioning fighting horses. She quickly looked back forward ignoring it for the moment.

She understood what he meant by dark sounding unreal, "True most try too hard to impress which then makes them unreal. Also wildebeast when scared will run together sometimes a few loners will stray but since they're not that large a herd. I guess if you go round the back then chase them towards me I'll strike there. Though I'll probably go for one of the females for the moment. "

They were getting closer now, she crouched down low. Her underbelly touching the grass, moving forward slowly she looked up at Wrhaevn and spoke, "Or do you have another way?"

"There are an even number of males and females, so go after a male instead. That way, if we catch him, the female will be able to produce offspring for the coming years. If we kill a female, though, the leftover male would do nothing but cause competition within the wildebeest herd, and that would only cause more trouble for breeding season. Meaning less offspring." Wrhaevn nodded, then turned away to walk in a big circle around the wildebeests. Wrhaevn kept his nose on the wind, and used the vegetation to hide in as he crouched, keeping a good few hundred feet away.

He circled until he was opposite of where Lamia was, unsheathed his claws, and charged forward silently.

When Wrhaevn got within a hundred meters, he let loose of a loud roar. His claws gave him traction as he rose faster and faster to his full speed. He watched the wildebeests, which had freaked and started running away towards Lamia. Their hooves had no dust to kick up in the grass. One of them hesitated as it considered fighting, but forgot about it and kept running. It's hesitation put it a good seven feet back from the rest of the group, but unfortunately, it was male.

Wrhaevn got excited with the thrill of the chase. However, with the stray wildebeest being an easier target, he knew Lamia faced a decision- one she would have to make quickly. Would she stick with her plan and go for the male? Or take a risk and tackle a female? If she went for the male, it would show that she was independent and able to think for herself. If she did the latter, there would be more food in the future, and it would prove her willingness to follow Wrhaevn.

Wrhaevn grinned in his head. It would be good to see what she did. He thought well of her no matter what would happen, for he believed she was trustworthy, so he really didn't care what she did. He hoped, however, that she wouldn't hesitate- like the example with the wildebeest, hesitation would set you back.

Nodding once again she could see now that he was thinking ahead, clever. She watched as he circled the wildebeest, waiting for him to stop she turned back to the wildebeest. They were off Wrhaevn had charged, now they were charging towards her. Staying calm she quickly thought up a little target plan. It was too risky to get the lead wildebeest for he was probably stronger and a prey like that needs more then one lion to take it down without any deaths; no, she'd get the next in line.

They were very close and she didn't have long till they were in striking distance. She looked closely at the herd, one was pulling out. He seemed too afraid from the lion behind them to care about his herd. Lamia smirked to herself, he looked the kind of wildebeest who wasn't the cleverest one them all but only worked their way up through fighting and getting stronger.

He was her target, he was ahead of his herd enough so that when Lamia went in for the kill the rest of the herd would have seen and scattered, making Lamia safe from being trampled to death. Though she may get a few kicks from the male, they would only be a few little scratches.

He was just in front of her, the perfect chance. She leapt up towards the wildebeest's neck opening her strong jaws wide she bit down hard on the neck. She had jumped at an angle so the wildebeest didn't have a chance of crushing her as he ran forward. He fell to the ground quickly, he legs kicking madly. But Lamia was already laying across him, holding him down. Her sharp teeth crushing his windpipe, they wouldn't open for the world, so this wildebeest would die a slow and painful death, just how she liked it.

The wildebeest was dead after a minute, she held on though for a little longer in case he was still alive, though he wouldn't be able to go far just die somewhere close. She just didn't want to go chasing after him. Her jaws released and she got off the males and sat down by the belly waiting for Wrhaevn. She guessed he should eat first since he was the male and she didn't exactly have a rank, so she'd first see him eat first for she would rather that then to have a large scratch on her body showing that she was meant to wait. She was also the respectful kind of lioness, who was taught that if you want respect you must give it first, depending on the different situations Lamia would sometimes change it around.

Wrhaevn had put a boost on his charge, hoping to trip the wildebeest for Lamia. But seeing as how it was ahead anyways, it was faster than he was. It was running for his life, after all. Wrhaevn slowed to a stop by Lamia, watching the rest of the wildebeests scatter as they ran, then pull together a little ways ahead.

He looked at Lamia. She had killed the wildebeest slowly, but had waited for him to get there. It had also seemed that she didn't really base her decision on appearance, she just did what would be best for the hunting success. He had forgotten that... If she had done something else, they might have had nothing to eat at all. Smart lion- respectful, too, as she had waited for him.

"Go ahead and eat, I really don't have much preference of the meat. If the conditions were different, maybe, but not now. Also..." He looked directly at her as he sat down. "You made the kill." He then lowered his head and bit into the front leg, going for the muscle as he ripped through the flesh. It was fresh, and good. They had gotten lucky.

Surprised by his words she listened carefully always starring at him. She smiled at him as he stated that she'd killed it. He was right and he didn't seem to care about who ate first. She hated when males would lay on their arses all day then just take the carcass that you risked your life for, later on giving about a quarter of it back to 11 or 12 hungry mouths to feed.

She walked over to the rump, her favourite part was either the actual thigh or just between that and the rump. It had quite a lot of muscles there for the prey would use it a lot so it would be built up. She bit down on the skin and ripped it off, revealing the bloody meat underneath that she loved the taste of. Tearing a large chunk of meat out of the leg she began to devour it. The rich taste of wildebeest swallowed her.

After finishing the leg just leaving behind the bone with a few tiny bits of meat still attached to it. She started to have a go at the stomach, biting down hard on the thick skin it opened and blood poured out. Ripping the hole wider she could see the muscles that surrounded the organs. She dug in not caring what she ate, she was starving and didn't care how much she ate as long as she was full.

Finishing off her meal, she'd only eaten about half the inside of the wildebeests barrel. She walked over to where Wrhaevn was, yawning wide as she stretched. She lay next to Wrhaevn full which made her a little sleepy and the hot sun wasn't helping either.

Wrhaevn had simply eaten the foreleg, and then finished off the meat in the barrel. His tongue came up over his bloody maw to clean it so the blood wouldn't harden.

"You're probably surprised that I let you eat whenever," Wrhaevn said, "Since males usually sleep most of the day except to fight rivals. But I'm of Tsaro blood, and Tsaro males hunt with the females. So I understand what it's like." Wrhaevn's ears perked up to a sound, but it was only a couple of buzzards flying overhead. He ignored them and layed down like Lamia did. The wildebeest settled well in his stomach, and noticing Lamia getting sleepy only made him sleepy as well. After a calm, silent few minutes, he stood up slowly.

"It is not good to sleep after a meal, unless you're building up for the winter. We could go for a run to work that food into muscle, perhaps? Come, it's also best the let the vultures fill their bellies." Their wasn't that much left of the carcass anyways. Like true lions, they had gorged themselves, for they never knew when came the next available meal.

Her ears faced Wrhaevn while he spoke, she had heard about Tsaro lions and had told her father about how the helped in the hunt, but he would only laugh and would joke about them which made Lamia hate him for his cruel jokes about everything. Though my mother was very interested and would often ask about them but I had only heard stories so I had nothing to say.

She woke from her past as she heard Wrhaevn's voice again, standing up she padded over to his side. He was right, if they fell asleep it would build into fat and a fat lion is not the best of hunters. She waited for him to lead, for she had no idea where they were off to.
